Mayor Suggests Moving Lucas Museum to McCormick Place
I think this is great. It would be a real show of force if the Mayor, Lucas, and FOTP all came out and jointly presented this plan together as a compromise solution.
Lakeside Center is striking and beautiful to me, but I would be willing to give it up for this museum and parkland. Maybe they can build a new modern convention center at Michael Reese and connect it to the main building over I55.
Here’s why this is becoming an issue. Currently, the museum is "free" and only gets revenue from parking. Well, now that some people are arriving to the museum via the Expo Line, the total trip is free and there is $0 earned by each person taking Metro. In the end, it cheats the museum out of revenues. Maybe the museum needs to stop depending on parking revenue and start charging an entrance free so that people who arrive via Metro pay the fair share for an entrance ticket?
Fate of Atlanta’s Confederate monuments to be decided this fall
I definitely don’t want to see a museum that would in any way, shape, or form honor the confederacy. I agree with you. A few of these statues would be an interesting addition to the civil rights museum. But there are MANY of these statues. They would not all fit – or be welcome – in the Civil rights museum. Not to mention, the current owners of many of these monuments would be reticent to donate them to a museum. Again, I think the most likely scenario would involve many monuments being removed, but never displayed again.
Rejected by Chicago, George Lucas museum gets OK from Los Angeles city council
I went to a public hearing early in the process where a number of options were discussed. There are not many places that make sense for a large museum other than the Museum Campus. Many people have their own personal agendas and wanted him to build the museum in places that didn’t make sense because they were too far from tourist areas. Additionally, the design of the museum and landscaping changed based on feedback after the initial proposal was released.
However, I agree that he could have done a better PR job.
@Martin Paul: One man’s close is another man’s too far away. The point is that people still have to drive from most of the locations you cited.
Plus I think you’re underestimating the ability of Walt Disney geeks to spend two days in the Walt Disney Family Museum. And I can’t imagine Lucas Film exiling its guests to Lombard Street.
After ditching Chicago, George Lucas unveils competing West Coast museum plans
As a Chicagoan I’m OK with the museum going back to Cali! I was not to fond of the original design for the Lucas in Chicago but it’s still the best out of these three! By the way we are still building skyscrapers unlike in L.A and San Francisco where one goes up every decade or starts sinking into the ground!
