Great cities have to pick their spots, and for San Francisco, a George Lucas Museum just doesn’t warrant being situated at Crissy Field or on the downtown waterfront. Better that these SF amenities evolve slowly, in a way that best benefits the general public, than as a give-away to a commercial attraction (we already have one Fisherman’s Wharf).
Lucas has knee-jerk settled for a fairly remote Chi locale — and that’s being optimistic, in the best of seasonal weather. Far more a near-term "win" for Chicago than a long-term "loss" for SF (given the options, available to the city). For seven months of the year, south of Soldier Field is a L-O-N-G distance from downtown and North Side (even further, when viewed from a visitor’s hotel room). The thinking must be that Lucas is envisioning the bulk of repeat visitors coming from South Side, the burbs, and refugees from the convention center. I can’t imagine this impacting anyone’s recreational travel plans (SF or Chi… Hmmm ???) Great sales job by Rham, though.
Lucas Museum's Updated Design Almost Ready for Prime Time
I actually liked the first proposal and thought it worked well in the proposed location. However, it wasn’t perfect and I look forward to seeing the new design.
And most importantly a big thanks to the Lucas family for locating the museum in Chicago!
Lincoln Yards adds more affordable housing, will tweak plan again
Yah, my lack of vision for a museum of questionable value. Not only on public land, but some of the most valuable land in the City. Lucas tried the same thing in SF and correctly told him to get bent.

If we were starting from scratch, I’d definitely prefer those facilities be located elsewhere. However, those ships have sailed. That doesn’t mean we should fill the rest of it in.
If Lucas was such a dedicated philanthropist, why didn’t he build his museum elsewhere in the City?
Is This Parking Lot The Future Home Of The Lucas Museum?
I think it is great that George Lucas is considering Chicago. It will be a fantastic asset to the City. The location makes a lot of sense due to proximity to museum campus and the fact that it will cover up parking lots.
Scooters Banned on Boardwalk, LA Spurned By George Lucas
It seems like George Lucas’ decision to build a Cultural Museum in Chicago and not San Francisco as he intended, is more of a retaliative act against the City of San Francisco, for not approving his three design proposals.
