Don’t let the name on the side of the half-demolished building at the corner of Halsted Street and Fulton Market fool you. The former Isaacson & Stein Fish Company at 800 W. Fulton Market is in the process of coming down thanks to New York-based developer Thor Equities, not a member of The Avengers.
The large brick structure—along with the John R. Morreale Meat warehouse at 820 W. Fulton Market and the former home of the The Mid nightclub at 306 N. Halsted Street—are making way for a striking 18-story office project next to the Fulton Market District sign that features trees planted on a series of step-like landings.
Designed by Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the $95 million office tower will rise approximately 300 feet high and contain commercial retail space and 32 parking spaces. It will join three new office tower neighbors at 330, 333, and 360 N. Green by developer Sterling Bay.
Third-generation seafood distributor Isaacson & Stein Fish Company sold 800 and 810 W. Fulton Market to Chicago-based developer R2 Companies in 2016 for a reported $9 million before later selling to Thor. Morreale—one of the largest and oldest meatpackers in what once was a district for of them—got $36.1 million for their properties.
The Mid was a nightlife hotspot at 306 N. Halsted Street known for its EDM shows, including the first-ever Chicago appearance by dubstep artist Skrillex. The venue closed its doors in February after nine years.
