Completed in 1965 by noted and self-taught architect Edward Humrich, this handsome midcentury modern home in suburban Riverwoods, Illinois, does not disappoint.
Much like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian homes, Humrich’s low-slung creations embrace their natural surroundings through walls of glass and abundance of wood. The designer built dozens of homes in Riverwoods, a North Shore village which placed many of its residences among mature trees instead of clear-cutting its lots.
“Mr. Humrich’s Riverwoods homes...demonstrate his philosophy that man should not try to separate himself from nature but should acknowledge that he is an irrevocable part of it,” noted the Chicago Tribune in Humrich’s 1992 obituary.
This three-bedroom, two-bathroom example at 6 Big Oak Lane is no exception. It sports a decidedly modern—almost Japanese—exterior with a wrap-around deck screened by trees. Inside, it boasts expansive wooden skylit ceilings, a mix of hardwood and polished concrete floors, and an updated but still midcentury-themed kitchen.
The 54-year-old structure also recently received a new roof, HVAC system, water heater, and commercial grade dehumidifier, according to the listing notes by agents Mike and Marcia Vecchione of @properties. The Humrich-designed home is currently asking $523,000.
