Developers looking to convert Logan Square’s former Grace’s Furniture building into a trendy boutique hotel are preparing to kick-off the approval process at an upcoming community meeting scheduled for early June.
First reported last summer, the proposed adaptive reuse of the vacant commercial structure at 2618 N. Milwaukee Avenue comes from developers Marc Realty and LG Development and hotel operator Holiday Jones. It calls for 44 guest rooms, a new rooftop space, and a pair of restaurants from The Fifty/50 Group.
A first image of the yet-to-be-named project appeared on a recent flyer distributed by the office of 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa. The public notice was first obtained by Block Club Chicago.
Although not necessarily representative of the final product, the sole rendering features new windows overlooking Milwaukee Avenue and Logan Square’s Illinois Centennial Monument as well as the reuse of Grace’s familiar spiral-topped exterior signage. The design comes from Chicago-based Bureau AD in collaboration with NORR Architects.
Details of the plan will be discussed at a community presentation hosted by Alderman Ramirez-Rosa on June 6 at 6:30 at Logan Square’s Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, located at 2614 N. Kedzie Avenue. The project will require a zoning change from the city to move forward.
In addition to its prominent location at the intersection of Logan Boulevard and Milwaukee Avenue, the location of the proposed hotel is also known for an infamous billboard promoting the film Aloha. Gracing the top of Grace’s for more than a year after the movie left theaters, the local cult landmark was removed in 2016.
