A new Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Center at Chicago’s Richard J. Daley College took a big step forward last week as the $45 million undertaking was awarded two construction permits. The pair covers a revision to the foundation system as well as the full build-out for the project headed to 4101 W. 76th Street in the West Lawn community on Chicago’s Southwest Side.
Designed by JGMA in collaboration with CannonDesign, the revamp will reclad Daley’s existing educational building and construct a 57,000-square-foot addition. The annex will bridge 76th Street and replaces a portion of a neighboring parking lot with new labs, administrative offices, and communal areas for students.
From its conveyer belt-like layout to splashes of “caution yellow,” the futuristic architecture takes numerous cues from modern factories. The facility will prepare Chicago area students for an influx of engineering and manufacturing jobs expected over the next decade.
Targeting LEED Gold certification, the Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Center at Daley College hopes to welcome students in January 2019.
