Plans to build out a space for an “Amazon store” across from the James R. Thompson Center are in the works, according to a building permit filed Wednesday. The space will be solely dedicated to a 625-square-foot retail and pick up location with 2,012 square feet reserved for storage.
The work, estimated at about $325,000, also includes a revised layout, new interior finishes, updated electrical services and devices, and reworking of the HVAC and plumbing.
Recently news surfaced that six new Amazon Go stores could be opening up this year. While those six locations haven’t been released yet, Chicago could be on the short list.
The only Amazon Go store that currently exists is in Seattle with 1,800 square feet of retail space. So if the site at 203 N. LaSalle Street is actually for an Amazon Go store, it would have a much smaller shopping area.
The Amazon Go store doesn’t have a cashier and uses a system of cameras and sensors to track what people pick up. Shoppers scan their Amazon Go smartphone app when they enter through turnstiles and again when they leave, which charges the account.
Chicago already has an Amazon Books store and it’s one of the 20 cities being considered for the company’s second headquarters.
