Although Chicago’s historic Printer’s Row neighborhood is home to an impressive collection of old-school industrial lofts turned condos, few are as large and family-friendly as this sprawling five-bedroom example in the landmarked Donohue Building at 711 S. Dearborn Street.

The 4,500-square-foot residence—created by combining three smaller units—features original exposed brickwork, overhead timber beams, large windows, and other architectural elements that hint at the 1883 Romanesque revival structure’s industrial past.

These older bits are tastefully complemented by newer additions such as a gallery-style entranceway, sleek designer kitchen, and a spacious great room with floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves and a wet bar for entertaining.

“It’s hard to find anything like this in the area,” listing agent Christopher Klanyac of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty told Curbed Chicago. “The space is family-friendly and absolutely lives like a single family home.

The supersized loft, however, comes with an equally hefty asking price of $1.95 million plus nearly $3,300 in monthly HOA fees. While there’s no denying the large unit’s appeal, the price could turn some buyers off—especially when neighboring units (like this handsomely renovated two-bedroom that listed for $450,000) can be found for much less.

“I think it will require a certain type of buyer who can appreciate its individual style and character,” added Klanyac.
