Last night, the University of Chicago and Baltimore-based Wexford Science and Development announced plans for 280,000 square feet of office and laboratory space at the corner of 53rd Street and S. Lake Park Avenue. The development would be the next phase of the large Harper Court project which has already delivered a 12-story office building, a 130-room Hyatt Place Hotel hotel, new retail space, and roughly 500 parking spaces.

Expected to house U of C offices, labs, and new companies spun-off from the nearby Polsky Center business incubator, this next phase would call for a 16-story vertical expansion of an existing four-story parking structure along Lake Park. When revealed back in 2010, the original Harper Court plan initially envisioned a 44-story condominium tower to occupy this space.
According to DNAinfo, the development team expects to host future meetings as the design of the 261-foot office structure and its breakdown of tenants become more clear. A representative from Wexford stated that construction is reportedly expected to begin in the spring of 2018 and take about two years to complete.
