Riding the momentum of the upcoming Obama Presidential Center and companion projects like the new Tiger Woods golf course, developers have taken the wraps off of two big projects slated for Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood. Unveiled at two community meetings held over the past week, the proposals illustrate growing interest in bringing new residences, dining, and entertainment options to the South Side community.
According to DNAinfo, South Shore’s first new condo development in 10 years would rise at 6740 S. South Shore Drive—the site of a failed 30-story tower that fell victim to the Great Recession. The seven-story, 24-unit project from developer Carlton Knight is still being negotiated and will reportedly take an estimated 18 months to construct if and when a deal is reached.
Several blocks to the southwest, DNAinfo also has the scoop on a second proposal calling for a new three-story mixed-use building at 7054 S. Jeffery Blvd. Developed by Alisa Starks, the project would contain a 10-screen dine-in movie theater, a Creole style restaurant, and private event space. Both South Side proposals have tapped Chicago-based Johnson and Lee Architects to serve as lead designer.
