This afternoon, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman Milly Santiago (31st), and representatives from developer Clark Street Real Estate joined together to break ground on a new retail development for the Avondale community. Dubbed Retail at the Fields, the new development will span two separate lots and deliver 50,000 square feet of commercial space when completed later this year. The developments will replace surface parking lots which previously served the former Marshall Field’s warehouse buildings.
The new retail developments will join the sprawling brick and glass buildings which have since been polished and are being marketed as tech office space. Cermak Fresh Market became the first major retail anchor to open at the former Marshall Field’s site last summer, delivering a 70,000-square-foot store and hundreds of new jobs to the area. So far, Ross Dress for Less is inked for the new retail complex underway.
