A More Detailed Look at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater Expansion

New renderings from Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture offer a better look at the new facility

Last month, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier announced that the hometown architects Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill have been selected to design its ambitious $35 million addition. The firm, which has designed some of the tallest buildings in the world, has released a handful of renderings of what the new addition will eventually look like.

The addition, dubbed "The Yard," will increase the Chicago Shakespeare Theater's footprint at Navy Pier by doubling its current capacity. According to Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, The Yard will boast a new 35,000 square foot "adaptable, flexible auditorium with modular towers."

And similar to the firm's other projects, technology will be a highlight of the CST's expansion. The Yard's lobby will feature a dynamic electrochromic facade, which will help reduce glare and make heating and cooling of the lobby more efficient.

Construction on The Yard is anticipated to begin this spring.
