While it's not a guarantee that something is on the way, soil sampling is almost always a sign that construction is about to begin on a new development. A reader has recently spotted a soil sampling rig on 1801 W. Grace Street, a site where a six-story apartment development has been previously planned. While the plan received some criticism from residents who were concerned about traffic and potential for congestion, these photos suggest that we may see workers digging in sometime in the coming weeks. The property is wedged in between two rail networks — one operated by the CTA and the other used by Metra. The development, first proposed almost exactly two years ago, will feature 62 apartments.
