New senior housing development moving forward on Near West Side

A stretch of vacant property will become a five-story, 62-unit senior housing development

The Chicago Department of Planning and Development has approved a TIF assistance plan that will allow a developer to purchase and redevelop a stretch of city-owned property on the Near West Side into a row of new apartments for senior housing. Known as the McCrory Senior Apartments, the project from Brinshore Development and First Baptist Congregational Church will deliver 62 new residences and a slew of amenities for seniors.

Landon Bone Baker Architects are leading the design duties for the five-story affordable senior housing development that will span ten vacant lots from 1637-59 W. Washington Boulevard on the Near West Side. The exterior of the development will be clad with brick and aluminum and will feature “front porch” seating not only to provide a better pedestrian experience but to allow residents a place to congregate.

The project include amenities such as a community room, a fitness center, a theater room, computer room, and an exam room for medical checkups. The project will also include 20 parking spaces located behind the development. Brinshore Development pegs the total cost of the development to be $19 million. According to the plan, the City of Chicago is prepared to front up to $4.1 million in TIF dollars for the project.
