Much catchier than “McCormick Place Event Center,” the future home of DePaul University’s basketball program will now be known as Wintrust Arena. According to Crain’s the soon to be announced 15-year naming deal could bring DePaul as much as $22 million over an unspecified time period. The school is the sole recipient of sponsorship revenue in exchange for splitting the facility’s $164 million price tag with Chicago’s Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority.
Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the ravioli-shaped stadium is slated to open on Chicago’s near south side later next year. The area and the upcoming 1,206-room Marriott Marquis tower are expected to anchor the so-called ”McCormick Square” entertainment district. Not limited solely to college basketball games, the facility could host between 50 and 70 events a year, including conventions and concerts.
Wintrust, meanwhile, is on track to expand its already established footprint across Chicago’s professional sports scene. The Rosemont-based bank currently sponsors both the Chicago Cubs and White Sox and serves as title sponsor for the annual Race to Mackinac sailing regatta.
