Heavy equipment spotted at site of future IMD Gateway mega-project

The new development will deliver hundreds of new apartments, hotel rooms, and parking spaces

Could construction on the $300 million Gateway project for the Illinois Medical District be imminent? A reader recently spotted ground crews and heavy machinery clearing the area to make way for construction of the project which will deliver a handful of new buildings for retail, residential, and hotel uses on a 10 acre site on the West Side. A sign at the site of the project (as well as the website) indicates that The Gateway project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2018.

The project will deliver hundreds of new hotel rooms, hundreds of new apartments, hundreds of new parking spaces, and hundreds of thousands of new retail space to the IMD. Major components of the mega-development include a ten-story building that will feature a dual flag hotel featuring the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites brands, another mid-rise tower will include 230 rental apartments, or “young professional housing,” according to the website, an 800-space parking structure, and a 2.6 acre park. There’s also another three parcels that could feature up to 550,000 square feet of commercial space.

Here’s a peek at the site plan and some of the conceptual renderings of how the new development will look once completed in a couple of summers.
