There's been some big news on the Motorola front in the Chicago area this week. Motorola Mobility, the maker of cell phones, has announced that it will be laying off 500 employees and is looking to sublet some of the space at its new Merchandise Mart HQ that it moved into less than two years ago. According to Crain's, Motorola Mobility is shopping around for one or two big tenants to fill 200,000 square feet of space in its 604,000 square foot office. Meanwhile, Motorola Solutions has announced that it is ready to move a chunk of its workforce from its Schaumburg headquarters and bring 800 jobs into the city.

Perhaps it was only a matter of time before Motorola Solutions decided put one foot in the city, as the list of legacy Chicagoland companies relocating to Chicago continues to grow each month. According to the Tribune, Motorola Solutions will take over 150,000 square feet of space at 500 W. Monroe. The company isn't completely breaking up with its suburban campus as 1,600 employees will remain at their Schaumburg headquarters.
