Now that the Purple Line will be renovated and its slow zones eliminated, it might be a good time to take a look at the housing market in Evanston. Sure, it's still a little far away from downtown when taking public transit, but you can still get a lot of bang for your buck when heading far north. While this unit is a short walk from the Central CTA station, it's right next door to the Central Street Metra station, which would be even better than the CTA for downtown commuters. This 840-square-foot one bedroom is nothing terribly exciting, but its $165,000 asking price is quite nice. It's a first floor unit with the bedroom and laundry in the basement, so it technically qualifies as a duplex unit, although it's somewhere in between a garden and a true first floor unit. After a twenty percent down payment, the mortgage on this place would be cheaper than renting.
