Following news earlier this week that Australian-based developer Lend Lease will be partnering with CMK Companies to lead a $1.5 billion mega-project to fully redevelop the South Loop site known as River South, Crain's reports that Ralph Johnson, FAIA, LEED AP, Global Design Director at Perkins + Will has been selected as the project's master planner.
Johnson has a distinct, streamlined, modern style and is known for projects such as Chicago's iconic Rush University Medical Center, Terminal 5 at O'Hare International Airport, Angola's Universidade Agostinho Neto, and other projects, including two residential developments in Chicago—the Contemporaine and 235 W. Van Buren—with CMK Companies. The development at River South is expected to begin in 2016 and end in 2026, and will be Johnson's largest project in Chicago to date. And as a leading architect— a 36-year veteran at Perkins + Will, with over 70 design awards, eight national honor awards, and over 50 regional AIA awards—it will be exciting to see what he has planned for this underdeveloped corner of the city.
UPDATE: This post has been updated to reflect the correct timeline of the plan, which is expected to take ten years.
