Could this Soil Sampling Rig in Old Town Signal Something Big?

Chicago's Near North Side is witnessing a flood of major development activity from new towers coming to River North, the redevelopment of the large Cabrini-Green site and possibly something new coming to Old Town. A reader recently spotted a soil sampling rig at the surface parking lot at the southwest corner of North Park Avenue and North Avenue and sent us a few photos.

Hello Curbed Chicago! I wanted to share a picture this morning of soil samples being taken at the vacant parking lot on North Ave & North Park Ave in Old Town. Looks like this entire block is gearing up for something big as the neighboring businesses — Flattop Grill, McGinney's Tap have been closed for more than a year.

While I typically have no love lost for parking lots this one served the neighborhood well supporting the local businesses. It is usually full on Thurs., Fri. and Sat. nights for patrons on Wells Street.

Any idea on what is being proposed?

A quick search through the city's database of zoning applications was unfruitful, but this surface lot is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
