One of the Area's Greatest Modernist Homes Has Sold

New, 5 comments

Designed and built in 1957 by architect William Deknatel, this 3,500 square foot Winnetka home has officially found a new owner. Clearly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's brand of Prairie style yet unmistakably modernist, this squat stone and wood home first hit the market last June with a $3.75 million asking price, and sold last week for $2.98 million. The five bedroom home is tucked away on over an acre of wooden property and features 150 feet of private beach frontage, but the thing that made this home truly special was how true it remains to its original design and look. Sure, the kitchen isn't entirely perfect, but the photos reveal a home that effortlessly blends into its natural environment. This home is a perfect case study in mixing the Prairie School principle of blending a home into its natural surroundings with Mid-Century Modern minimalist aesthetics.
