Own the Palatial Adler Designed Morton Salt Estate for $8.9M

New, 3 comments

The Morton Salt Company, perhaps one of the best known brands from the Chicago area, has been in the Windy City since the very beginning. The company also made Joy Morton and his family very wealthy. Morton, a lifelong gardener and naturalist, used his wealth to create the Morton Arboretum in suburban Lisle, and his family was also pivotal in the creation of Arbor Day. This French Provincial style home designed by famed Chicago area architect David Adler was built for Morton's daughter Jean Morton Cudahy and her husband exactly one hundred years ago in 1914. The 11,000 square foot home is located on 2 acres of Lake Forest land and features a swimming pool, tennis court and gardens. Inside, the mansion almost looks like the fictional Downton Abbey, with custom marble finishes throughout the home, and even bathroom fixtures made from 24-karat gold. The home first hit the market in June 2010, and listed with an ask of $7.9 million. The home's broker recently told the Wall Street Journal that the homeowners have made some repairs since the home first listed, notably its electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning. The eight bedroom, nine and a half bathroom home is now asking $8.9 million.
