Like vultures circling over a downed animal, heavy machinery began surrounding the Lakeshore Athletic Club off the Magnificent Mile last week. On Monday, a demolition permit was issued to begin the demolition of the 441 N. Wabash Ave. location, thus explaining why there's a "metric buttload of heavy demolition equipment" at the site. So what the heck exactly is going on? As the Chicago Architecture Blog points out, once the space has been cleared, there will be an entire city block of prime downtown real estate available for something bigger and better. No word yet on what, if anything, is planned for the site. Perhaps a new Apple store? We'll be keeping our eyes peeled.
