Logan Square's Discount Mega Mall, a gigantic indoor flea market along Milwaukee Avenue, has long been considered an eyesore to many residents of the northwest side neighborhood, and in June, rumors of a possible redevelopment of the 130,680 square foot property began to emerge. Fast forward to today, and now there are renderings that may be for the redevelopment of the three acre stretch near the heart of Logan Square.
Commercial real estate broker Cushman & Wakefield had been marketing the property as one ripe for redevelopment for quite a while, but in June, a listing for the Mega Mall ended up on the website for retail developer Terraco, Inc. According to Alderman Waguespack's staff, Terraco claimed that at the time, the company had been exploring various redevelopment options for the Mega Mall. One particular plan included a grocery store and a fitness center as the retail development's anchors. A very early preliminary plan included a small surface parking lot tucked away behind the new development, and would not make room for any residences.
The redevelopment of the Mega Mall appears to be gaining momentum, but more concrete details will likely not be revealed until a community meeting takes place. A previous inquiry to Alderman Waguespack's office suggested that a public meeting to discuss the Mega Mall redevelopment could be taking place soon. With renderings now floating around, the meeting could be any day now.
