Visualizing Where Bicycle Crashes Happen In Chicago

New, 3 comments

Busy streets like Milwaukee Avenue, Clark Street and Ashland Avenue tend to be some of the most dangerous roads for bicyclists, according to this map that visualizes bike crash data from the Chicago Police Department. Of the thousands of bicycle crashes that happen every year, only a fraction are actually reported and according to this map from You Are Here, a project from the Social Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab, we can see exactly where all 1,570 reported accidents took place in 2012. Although the city has made big strides in the last few years with new bike lanes, it's clear that the majority of bike accidents in Chicago happen on busy commuting streets in neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Lincoln Park and the Loop.
