This week a community group in Streeterville unveiled a proposal to completely rework a section of the lakefront area north of Navy Pier, which includes the straightening and burying of Lake Shore Drive, the creation of two new beaches, as well as a completely new island to serve as a breakwater. DNAInfo Chicago has covered the majority of the details, but one thing interesting to note is that the plan does not seek to use public funds for this hypothetical undertaking. The community group seems confident they can raise all $177 million privately.
