About a year ago, the Gonnella Baking Co. facility at 1001 West Chicago Avenue was sold to Seattle-based Security Properties who intended to turn it into a 300+ home project designed by FitzGerald Associates. Things had been pretty quiet on that front until just now, when we got ahold of some first renders for the project from render-leaker extraordinaire spyguy.
The designs show two midrise towers each placed atop a retail base and separated by a small pedestrian walkway with a skybridge connecting the two. The southern building facing Milwaukee Ave features 7,030 square feet of divisible retail space, but more notably the north building on Chicago Ave includes a 25,605 square foot retail space obviously intended for grocery store use (though we don't know if any grocer is signed on yet). While not technically a food desert, the location is several blocks from the nearest major grocery store, so this mixed-use project could benefit the community quite a bit.
