Chicago's public transit systems are running a backlog of equipment, infrastructure and maintenance expenditures that may cost the city and state billions of dollars. The Regional Transportation Authority has indicated that the metro area's transit systems will require $33.4 billion over the next ten years in order to operate effectively, with $20 billion of that money going to station and track repairs and improvements.
