This Map Reveals the Contrast in Illinois' Road Infrastructure

Boston design firm Fathom has turned the national road atlas into a stark and gorgeous series of maps, such as the above road-only print of the Land of Lincoln. As covered in Citylab, these state-by-state posters, devoid of anything but the roads snaking through each territory, were derived from a 2010 exhibition the firm staged at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Germany. The process turns the profiles of states with inaccessible areas, such as swamp-filled Louisiana, into radically different shapes, and the contrast in Illinois is quite clear. The state has multiple major highways running through it, and several decent sized cities with clusters of road systems, however Chicago's footprint is substantial.
