The soon-to-be-renovated Bush Temple of Music in the Gold Coast will be transformed into a block of micro apartments, according to a representative of developer Cedar Street Companies quoted in a recent Crain's article. Cedar Street has renovated several old buildings throughout Uptown and Edgewater under their FLATS brand, and the National Historic Landmark on Chicago Avenue will be called FLATS No. 800 when it's redone. The old Bush Temple will contain small apartments in the 350 to 450 square foot range and will have somewhat affordable, or "approachable" rents if you will. According to Cedar Street reps, renderings aren't quite ready, but plans for the building also include a fitness center, commercial space and a garden with barbecues.
Due to the historic nature of the French renaissance revival-style building at Chicago and Clark streets, the interior work is expected to run at least $15 million when all is said and done, along with a $2.5 million pricetag to touch up the facade. The same group developing the former Bush & Gerts Piano Co.'s headquarters and showroom is also working on turning the former Gino's East in River North into apartments, adding quite a few historic apartment options to the near north side. The landmarks commission will have to approve and oversee any changes to the historic building, designed by the prolific J. E. O. Pridmore.
