As one of the city's biggest development sprouts up at the North and Clybourn corridor, the retail centerpieces of the New City mega-development are coming into focus, as well as the increased mall-ification of this stretch of the city. In addition to nearly 200 residential units (which will command some of the city's highest rental prices at more than $3 per square feet), the development will also incorporate a 14 screen ArcLight Cinema, restaurant a Dick's Sporting Goods with a green roof, a Mariano's (set to brawl with the nearby Whole Foods) and a King's Bowl bowling alley.
Developer Michael Drew originally acquired the land in 2007, and has persevered through a credit boom and bust to see the massive project nearly come to fruition (residential occupancy is set for May of next year). Ever since Home Depot turned a Procter & Gamble soap factory on North Avenue into one of the chain's top-performing locations, tower cranes have constantly circled the neighborhood as new retail stores keep succeeding. New City's biggest change may be adding residential and residential-focused retail and restaurants to an area dominated by commercial interests; luckily for new tenants, the heavily trafficked area is walkable.
