On Tuesday, members of the Writers Theater's leadership and Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects broke ground on the new Writers Theater facility in suburban Glencoe. The $31 million project will feature two performance spaces, a rehearsal room and a rooftop terrace and garden. In total, the facility will provide 36,000 square feet of space, with the main theater making room for 250 seats, and a smaller performance space will provide seating for 50-99 attendees. The new center will be made of wood, glass and plaster and will blend with its outdoor surrounding, going for a "Theatre in a Park" vibe, according to the Writers Theater. Construction will continue through next year and will wrap up in time for a 2016 opening.
