Earlier this year Landmarks Illinois named the collective batch of Chicago Bascule Bridges an endangered species. Among the most deteriorated and sensational of these lift bridges is the Ashland Avenue Bridge crossing the North Branch just south of Fullerton. Archicritic Lynn Becker revisits the nagging repairs and preservation effort needed to recover the Depression Era bridge's epic Art Deco reliefs, iron work, and bridge houses.
