Thorek Hospital has been "buying, bulldozing and landbanking" properties adjacent to its Uptown campus over the last few years, writes archicritic Lynn Becker. Problem is, these new holdings are now plots of parched lawn where decent buildings once stood. Continuing this pattern, Thorek has purchased the recently-shuttered Nick's Uptown building— an Egyptian-styled 1920s structure built in the dawn of "Egyptomania" and once home to a Hupmobile showroom and an Egyptian supper club. Uptown Update is trying to put the gears in motion to landmark the building before almost-certain demolition. [ArchitectureChicago PLUS]
