Edward Dart-Designed Lakefront Mansion w/ Bomb Shelter

New, 13 comments

An all-brick landmark home by famed modernist architect Edward Dart (with Water Tower Place his crowning achievement) has hit the market on the Glencoe lakefront. Dart designed scores of modernist homes in the Chicago area in his brief career, but this is the largest and best-composed we've seen listed for sale (here's another great one, albeit far different). The early-1960s property has 17 rooms, seven beds, four full baths, a towering foyer, a basement billiards room and bomb shelter doubling as storage space, large stone terrace, outdoor pool, and an acre lot backing on to Lake Michigan. Lest you think the work unlivable, here's a strong testament to the contrary: it's been owned by one couple for the past 38 years. The ask? $3.15M.
