The Chicago Architecture Blog does a commendable job summarizing local perspectives on the McPier hotel and arena project at Cermak & Indiana. While the project's bullet point stats have been discussed here and elsewhere, this piece shows historic preservation concerns, the marketing angle, and the economic strategy behind a mega-development promising to regenerate McCormick Place and Motor Row. There's plenty who think it'll fail in its mission and/or create new problems for residents. Some question whether the cluster can be built without harming historic structures like the American Book Company Building and the Prairie District's Rees House. And if the whole show is linked by skywalk, how are local businesses supposed to tap foot traffic? [CAB, previously]
