Malling of America

The interior mall at The Plaza at Evergreen Park closed last week. Cue photographer Katherine Hodges and her undying love for shuttered suburban malls. The Plaza opened in 1952 as the first modern shopping mall in Chicagoland. While it closed on Friday, a few tenants with longer leases will stay put in the open air plaza. According to the managing general partner, the economics of operating a 920,000 square-foot space with just a few hangers-on businesses makes for an impossible equation. Anyway, it's becoming quite clear what people want — highway-side outlet centers and downtown shopping districts (i.e. Clybourn Corridor).
