The designers of NYC's riotously hip Ace Hotel have been signed to the redevelopment of the Chicago Athletic Association building as a 240-room boutique hotel at Michigan & Madison. AJ Capital Partners and Commune Hotels & Resorts got their construction loan earlier this month and have commenced interior demolition. Roman and Williams will work the space with an eye for sensitive conversion: the old gym will beget a ballroom, a "living room for a new generation" will arise from the second-floor drawing room, the roof will sprout a greenhouse, and a new sports room/pool hall/bar promises to rekindle the landmark building's past life. Per the firm's press release: "Our reverence for this monumental building cannot be overstated, but we want to breathe a new life into it, to care for it without treating it like a relic."
