The city wants you to believe it's installing 100 miles of "protected" bike lanes by 2015, but the reality is that painted "buffered" lanes have been redefined as protected in the wake of IDOT's prohibition of barrier-protected lanes on state roads. Nothing is ever as good as it sounds, but at least CDOT is responding promptly to safety concerns on Clybourn after the tragic death of biker Bobby Cann late last month. The city announced it will stripe buffered lanes on the entire 3.5-mile length of Clybourn, from Division to Belmont. John Greenfield of Streetsblog Chicago discusses the local response, the state's position, and how this action is a good start but not good enough. [Streetsblog, photo by Steven Vance]
