Slot Opens in Burnham's Sublime Marshall Field, Jr Mansion

The Marshall Field, Jr Mansion was converted to condos a decade ago, and roughly one resale crops up each year. Last year we tangled with unit #3 — a larger, pricier space still listed for $1.85M. This year we welcome unit #5, the "penthouse" unit (if such a claim can be reasonably made). It's had more modern interventions than some, but there's still a simple grandeur to it recalling the mansion's ties to famed architects Solon Spencer Beman and Daniel Burnham (commissioned for an 1890s expansion). Trapezoidal window bays, tall windows, custom hardwoods and moldings, balcony, and a marble master bathroom all work wonders. The other wonder is price: a 2,300 square-foot 2/2.5 unit in a landmark of old Prairie Avenue for just $725K, or $25K less than the 2008 sale.
