Chicago hasn't entirely evolved away from large-scale manufacturing. Two of the most visible (and smellable) examples are the South Side's Ford Plant and Fulton River's Blommer Chocolate. But WBEZ's Curious City column wanted to see what's really kept Chicago in the #2 slot in manufacturing nationally. The answer: countless small and mid-sized firms that ensure the city never over-specializes. You name it, we make it: pinball machines, bikes, lava lamps, lollipops, trophies, granola, and coffee grinders. The last two are the column's main focus, with profiles of Milk & Honey Granola and Modern Process Equipment. Click through for more. [WBEZ, photo: Ben Stutzman/Flickr]
