At last night's CDOT meeting innovative bike lanes were proposed for Milwaukee Ave, from Kinzie to Elston. Buffers and reflective posts will be added to existing lane striping along much of the route, a segment of parking-protected lane will go in between Carpenter and Ogden, lanes will be extended to intersection crosswalks, and "bike boxes" will improve elbow room and safety at major intersections. There was the expected vocal pushback from non-cyclists and business owners, who cited the subtraction of street parking and "lawlessness" of cyclists as reasons for scaling back the plan. Last year, however, a petition supporting protected lanes received 2,800 signatures. [Streetsblog Chicago, previously]
