Crafty But Institutional Malcolm X Campus Design Unveiled

New, 26 comments

Its construction start is almost a year off, but we've at least got something material to chew on while awaiting the city's new Malcolm X College at Jackson and Damen. A blunt rendering of the $251M project has gone public, and it's just about as minimalistic as the existing campus directly to the south, albeit with some angular daring. At 500,000 square feet, the complex will greatly expand the college's existing capacity. And we hope the design expands minds. Cannon Design — practiced in educational architecture — presented the "mock-up" at a community meeting Wednesday night. The eight story piece will be devoted to health sciences, a sensible addition to the campus given its geographical synergies with the Medical District. Whether or not the design thrills, it'll erase a big surface lot. As Skyscraper Page user Louis Van Der Wright remarks, "we might finally be seeing the beginning of the end of the United Sea of Parking." The campus expects to open in December 2015.
