Hold your horses. The midcentury modern Cuneo Memorial Hospital still has an outside chance at salvation through adaptive reuse. Although the 46th Ward Zoning and Development Committee voted to allow demolition of the hospital in concert with JDL's Maryville project, Ald. James Cappleman has yet to advance the demo to the city for permitting. Enter David Baum, developer of "Green Exchange" — a collection of eco-friendly businesses in Avondale. Baum envisions an arts operation for Cuneo — gallery, cafe, and studios built into old operating rooms. Baum has a month to sell his idea. Cuneo still awaits a walk-through by a structural engineer, so that's up first. The two proposals can theoretically be reconciled since this isn't where JDL will build. [DNAinfo, previously]
