CDOT has finalized its Complete Streets design guidelines, calling for the abandonment of car-centric roadway engineering in favor of safe, efficient, and flexible multi-modal design. According to the city, "All CDOT projects and programs will favor pedestrians as a priority mode of transportation. Chicago is among the first cities in the nation to decisively place pedestrians first." Street design will be conducted in a context-sensitive manner guided by overarching goals of boosting active transportation, giving a jolt to neighborhood business, and reducing traffic speed and crashes.
