The "new mecca" for punk rock in Chicago is arguably a residential loft space in Humboldt Park known as Swerp Mansion. Five dudes live there, run a regular lineup of shows, and operate the Swerp Records label. The "punk loft" is part of a circuit of home venues that book touring acts in part to expand the scene to up-and-coming bands and in part as a way for savvy fans to escape the for-profit environment. Also, Swerp maintains a "straightedge" practice of banning drugs and booze. Interested? You can find the exact address by contacting the Swerp crew. [Chicagoist, photo: Katie Karpowicz]
