Good news for urbanites with limited work histories: Rahm is aiming to convert five acres of vacant city-owned land into urban farms. The "Farmers for Chicago" program, announced today, calls on the expertise of various farm collectives like Growing Power and City Farm, along with Heartland Human Care Services and the Chicago Botanic Garden, to provide job training (and good food) to residents who live nearby. Several local groups already perform this service, so this just represents an expansion of resources and geography. One of the larger farms will be in Humboldt Park, and others are targeting the impoverished South Side. [Chicagoist, previously]
