The Chateau Hotel, a Lakeview single-occupany hotel (SRO), is shutting down for repairs and upgrades. In what state it returns and with what rents is not known. That's got low-income tenants worried they'll not be returning. Many also are stressed by the prospect of finding comparable housing on short notice, as some of their credit backgrounds are less-than-savory. Calls have gone out for benevolent intervention, but it's yet to be seen what the city answers with. There's no question The Chateau sucks. Developers like cashing in on such substandard buildings that sit on prime lake-proximate real estate, an almost inevitable trajectory when owners allow major disrepair. The new owner of the Chateau is "shrouded in mystery". It's no wonder folks are fearful. [WBEZ, previously]
