Chicago Mag's Whet Moser trotted out some useful lessons from three very different river walks in hopes of informing Chicago's own Riverwalk strategy. In a nutshell: Indianapolis = poorly conceptualized bad design; San Antonio = mixed-use paradise with transformative power for its downtown; and London = development tool for forlorn industrial lands beyond the center city. While the bleak, cold, suburban underpinnings of Indy's 1.5-mile river walk don't threaten reemergence in The Loop, the prospect of too much recreational use and not enough commerce does loom in Chicago's present envisioning. And let's not forget the North and South branches. [Chicago Mag, previously]
