Wells High School, at 936 N Ashland, is closer to realizing its plans for a "Field of Hope" sports facility built on its existing parking lot. The school currently uses Eckhart Park's ballfields but has lusted after a more dedicated, attached space for some time. In November, CPS declared a springtime groundbreaking for the $2.5M development of baseball and soccer fields with a upward-sloping lawn, dog park, and provisions for summer movie screenings. The East Village Association reports today that a pledge of $100,000 to $200,000 was received from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, which will help catalyze further support. Any and all greenspace is welcome in East Village/West Town. [EVA]
